What are Chilblains

Chilblains are painful sores on the end of the lesser toes and sometimes fingers.

Chilblains are usually seen in the colder months, and are typically preceded by the toes ‘tingling’ and feeling ‘numb’ and ‘itchy’


Causes of chilblains

  • Vascular hypersensitivty (Raynauds Phenomenon)



     

  • Raynauds Phenomenon

 


Complications of chilblains 

  • Pain
  • Ulceration
  • Infection

 


Treatment of chilblains

  • Avoid extreme temperature changes – very hot showers and very cold floors
  • Thick woolen socks
  • Wax baths
  • Haemorrhoid cream
